Capital Girls League

Following a hugely successful first season, the Capital Girls’ League is expanding for the 2012-13 season and will operate both new age groups and from a second venue.

From the start of the new season, the League will continue to operate from the London Marathon Playing Fields, Chase Lodge, Barnet and will also stage matches at Beavers Sports Lodge, Hounslow.

Fixtures will run on alternate Saturdays, as they do now and the regular festivals that took place monthly during 2011-12 will be organised at both sites.  For next season, the League will run non-competitive matches at Under-9 and League fixtures at Under-11 at both sites.  Additionally, an Under-13 section will run at our Barnet site.

To assist the League’s officers with planning for the new season, all current member clubs are asked to complete an Intentions Form indication at which venue they would prefer to play, plus at which age groups they hope to run teams.  Potential new member clubs are also invited to complete this form and return it via email to Sue Haynes.

Brentford Girls and Hampstead Youth at the League Cup FinalWith a dramatic 7-6 victory over league rivals Brentford Girls, Hampstead (Youth) B took the honours and were inaugural League Cup winners in the Under-12 Capital Girls League on Saturday.

Brentford took the lead after only a few minutes of the first half, with Hampstead replying quickly to make it 1-1.  The match swung backwards and forwards throughout the first half with teams going in equal at half time.

The facilities at The Hive Football Centre were superb, but the pitch was smaller than the regular league pitches which meant both teams took advantage of long throws into the box; the Brentford keeper was even caught off her line when a goal was scored directly from a Hampstead goal kick!

Some great finishing by both teams saw further goals in the second half; however Hampstead seemed to have sown up the game when leading 7-5 with five minutes to go.  Late drama ensued when a Hampstead player handled the ball in the penalty area and the resulting Brentford penalty was duly converted, 7-6.  The last couple of minutes of the match were nail biting with both teams having great opportunities to take the match, but Hampstead held on and enjoyed the celebration at the final whistle.

Faye WhiteOver 200 players took part in a special England themed football festival at London Marathon Playing Fields, Chase Lodge, Barnet to celebrate the upcoming England v Serbia Ladies Euro qualifier at Doncaster Rovers FC later this week.

England captain Faye White who is currently out of the squad with an injury was at the home of the Capital Girls League along with Arsenal team mates Jordan Nobbs and Kim Little.  All three players were mobbed by excited fans desperate for photos and autographs, but order was soon restored as the FA WSL ambassadors took charge and led a 15 minute warm up – with all 200 girls!

Teams and players were there from all over Hertfordshire, Middlesex and London with players as young as 6 enjoying a number of small sided games across the morning.  It was a chance for a number of newly developed teams to come and try football out in a non competitive (U8/9/10) festival environment.

Faye, Jordan and Kim stayed on to referee the Under 10 matches with Faye White later reporting on Twitter that players showed ‘great skills’

The Under 12s took part in a competitive 7v7 tournament and after some fantastic football Hampstead A went on to take the honours.  Hearts of Teddlothian Under 12 also put in a brilliant display and were awarded for their efforts with the Fair Play team award.

Awards were also given to individual players on each of the U8, U9 and U10 pitches for Fair Play which were well applauded by the spectators.

Craig Nicholson from Middlesex FA stated ‘there’s been a real buzz to today.  The number of girls here is testament to the outstanding work being delivered by grassroots clubs and coaches.  We’ve already had some brilliant feedback, and we look forward to planning the next one.’

The Capital Girls League and Hertfordshire Football Partnership who organised the event wish to send their thanks to all the volunteers that helped out.
